RYA Level 1- Start Sailing

About the course:

This course will give you a fun introduction to the basics of sailing a small dinghy and gives you opportunity to push yourself if you wish. The course includes:

- Rigging a boat

- Ropework

- Sailing techniques and manoeuvres 

- Clothing and equipment

- Capsize Recovery 

- Sailing Background

- Meteorology 

The course is mainly practical with a small theoretical element and is taught with lots of hands on practice. 

RYA Level 1 

Assumed Knowledge:

No previous Knowledge is required for the course.

Age:

16+

Certification:

At the end of the course the aim is to reach RYA Level 1 of the national sailing scheme.

RYA Level 2- Basic Skills

About the course:

On Completion of this course you will have a basic knowledge of sailing and be capable of sailing without an instructor on board in light winds. The Course includes:

- Leaving and returning to a

  pontoon/ mooring

- Coming alongside 

- Sailing in close company

- Performing a man overboard

  Recovery

- Five Essentials 

- Tacking upwind and Gybing

  Downwind 

- etc.

On completion of this course you will be able to join in social sailing at the club on Thursday evenings. 

Assumed Knowledge:

RYA Level 1 or equivalent

16+

RYA Level 2

Dates:

2nd - 3rd May

6th - 7th June

27th - 28th June

25th - 26th July

15th - 16th August

Certification:

At the end of the course the aim is to reach RYA Level 2 of the national sailing scheme.

RYA Level 3- Better Sailing

About the course:

On completion of this course the successful sailor will be safety conscious and capable of sailing without an instructor on board in light to moderate conditions. The course includes: 

- Leaving and returning to shore          

  including windward and leeward

  landings

- Recover a man overboard effectively

- Use tell tails 

- Demonstrate a Dry Capsize

- Skilful application of the 5 essentials 

- etc.

This course is aimed at getting you ready for the advanced modules as well as building your confidence as a sailor.  

RYA Level 3

4th - 5th July

Assumed Knowledge:

RYA Level 2 or equivalent  

Age:

16+

Certification:

At the end of the course the aim is to reach RYA Level 3 of the national sailing scheme.

RYA Sailing with Spinnakers

About the course:

On completion of this course you will understand how to sail a dinghy with an asymmetric spinnaker. This course includes:

- Rigging a boat with a spinnaker

- Can sail as helm or crew using the

  spinnaker

- Can hoist, drop and gybe the

  spinnaker as helm or crew

- Understand and can sail best course

  downwind

- Can perform capsize recovery

  including a spinnaker

- Knows how to recover a boat from

  total inversion

- etc.

RYA Level 3 or equivalent

16+

Certification:

At the end of the course the aim is to reach RYA Sailing with Spinnakers of the national sailing scheme.

18th - 19th July

RYA Start Racing

About the course

This course is designed to give the confidence, skills and knowledge to take part in club racing in good conditions. The course improves the sailor in a range of enjoyable exercises designed to build confidence and cement skills through practice. This course includes the following and more: 

- Making the best use of the five

  essentials as helm or crew

- Starting

- Mark Rounding

- Laylines

- Hiking 

- etc 

 

This course is aimed at getting you ready to join in racing at CBYC but it is also a good refresher for people who want to improve their racing skills.

RYA Level 3 or equivalent

16+

Certification:

At the end of the course the aim is to reach RYA Start Racing of the national sailing scheme.
