Angling Section

The Angling Section is a well established and supported section of CBYC. Not only do we currently enjoy a very vibrant club for the 2020/21 season with over 100 members but are always keen to encourage more. Any CBYC member is welcome to join the angling section whether a motor boat or sail boat owner, or in fact those members that only crew on boats from the club. All that is needed is a rod, reel and bait and you can fish.

We are looking at ways this year to adopt a catch and release system, so we can continue to fish for sea bass and also preserve our fish stocks.

Membership annual subscription is currently £15.00 per adult and only £1.00 per junior. Entry to competitions is normally free to all Angling Section members. Non members who are included as crew on a member’s boat, are always welcome for a modest fee.

Cash prizes are offered to encourage as many participants as possible. A schedule of competition dates for the coming season 2020/21 has already been drawn up and will be available from the competition organiser shortly. We endeavour to stage at least two competitions each month and these are normally held on Sundays but we do occasionally hold two day competitions in lieu of these. This year we will be holding three competitions in conjunction with Cardiff Yacht Club and Rhumney River Club. The first being the Bunny Cup followed later by the Triad Shield and the Gareth Davies Memorial Cup.

Our ‘Elite’ annual competition is the CBYC Angling Section ‘Open Cod Competition’ this will be held in December this year. The 2017 event celebrated 41 years of staging this event and attracted a record number of entries – some 150 boats accommodating in excess of 450 anglers, some of which travelled from afar; such is our prominence within the national anglers’ calendar. The committee for 2020/21 is as follows : –

Phil Evans (chairman), Bryn Thomas (vice chair) Simon Watts (treasurer) Paul Ackerman (membership sec) Steve Tipples, Don Sewell (media), Harvey Preston.

Anyone who is interested in joining the Angling Section, or perhaps aspiring to become a committee member, will always be in receipt of a warm welcome. We meet on the first Wednesday of each month in the ‘Quarter Deck Bar’ at 19.30,  we look forward to your company. It is worth noting that the Angling Section not only excels in promoting the sport of angling but also offers a very attractive social calendar with several ‘get togethers’ often including an invited artiste.

Hope to see you soon

Phil Evans

Chairman
