CBYC Open Cod Competition
21st November 2021
The 44th staging of the CBYC Open Cod Competition, believed to be the UK’s largest boat angling competition was held on Sunday 21st November 2021 out of Cardiff in the Bristol Channel.
Weather conditions on the 21st November although relatively benign in the morning soon proved to be challenging with the high pressure over the UK moving faster than predicted to provide a moderate Northerly gusting over 20knots in the afternoon period.
The competition was well supported with over 424 anglers fishing from 124 boats. Fishing was difficult finding the elusive cod with sprats evident on the fish finders in the channel.
19 fish were weighed in over the competition minimum limit of 2kg, and prizes were awarded to 19 anglers. (Due to exceptional problems with locking-in through the barrage caused by a combination of issues from lock availability, weather and boat congestion at locking-in, the Committee decided to take the unprecedented decision to be equitable and recognise and award a second 1st prize to a fish weighed in post the 1815 weigh scales closure time). A series of improvements will be implemented in future competitions.
The winning fish were V Sjoden (Tranquility) and D Crump (Challenger) with fish weighing over 7kg. 2nd Wyn Jenkins on Sand Storm with a fish 5.8kg and 3rd place S Manley on Millenium.
