Chris Pain

President

I’ve been a member of CBYC for 25 years and have been involved with most of the sections.

I grew up in Cardiff and spent my childhood messing around with my brothers on our boat on the bank of the River Ely so sailing and fishing were my passions until I discovered rugby in my teens.

I trained at the BBC as a cameraman, a career that took me all over the world.  From Cardiff I moved to Anglia Television where I met my wife who was a keen sailor and rediscovered my passion for sailing.  I purchased my first cruising yacht and spent several years exploring the East coast and Holland. Moving back to Cardiff we enjoyed windsurfing, dinghy sailing and extended cruising to France and Ireland.

Our three sons started to sail at CBYC and on the Norfolk Broads so it made sense for us to train as Dinghy Instructors and help along with other parents at the club.  Our lads went on to represent GBR at European and World Championships and whilst they were competing I spent many days in a rib as safety support. My family’s involvement in the Welsh and GBR Squads has given us the knowledge of the demanding challenges that young sailors and parents have in both managing time and financial commitments.

At present we have a cruising yacht and Laser dinghy at the club.
