Turbo Event Report |
|
| Just four hardy Laser 2000 crews braved the 20 knot winds and horizontal rain to take part in the CBYC Asymmetric Turbo challenge on 20th January. With gusts of between 25 and 30 knots, the conditions were challenging and there were capsizes a-plenty. Congratulations to Paul Thomas for being brave enough to take his boat out for the first time despite the conditions – judging by the size of the grins afterwards, I don’t think we’ve put him off. Three 10-minute windward-leeward races were run with time between races for the more experienced crews to go for a blast and for the safety boat to help retrieve the less experienced from their premature swim. The format is designed to give close racing, with emphasis on the start and good mark rounding. To gain maximum enjoyment from the event, helms and crews were encouraged to swap over between races. In Race 1, Jon Warburton and his crew got off to a good start, only to lose their lead at the first spinnaker drop when a tangled line forced them to sail some way off the course before they could put the spinnaker away. Andrew Phillips and Kevin Rolfe took advantage to take first place. In Race Two, Jon led the way from start to finish. Marc Watts, sailing with Paul Taylor, went for a gybe with the spinnaker up on the second downwind leg only to be catapulted into the water in a spectacular capsize. Unfortunately I wasn’t quick enough with the video camera to capture the action. In Race 3, again Jon showed that consistency and keeping the boat upright is key as he notched up a second win. Sailors Points Jon Warburton and Crew 4 Andrew Phillips & Kevin Rolfe 6 Paul Taylor & Marc Watts 8 Paul Thomas & Crew 12Over a hot coffee in the boat park, everyone agreed that the event had been enormous fun and that we should run similar events for each of the "adopted fleets" on a regular basis. A huge thanks to Idris Dibble and Ian Horton for their help on the safety boat and coach boat in miserable conditions.Helen Phillips |

Steve Cockerill Boat Whispers!!! |
|
| February 4th (Monday Night) – 1830 - £5 pay on the doorSteve explains how some boats sail faster than others - for no more than better technique - He hopes to upset your club's pecking order and really kick off the new sailing season. Sailors of all levels can benefit from the talk which utilises much footage from the boat whisperer DVD which includes close up footage of beginners, advanced and Olympic class sailors to help unlock the secrets. Yacht racers, dinghy racers, coaches, Youth Squad Sailors and all other sailors will be welcome. Please notify Nick Sawyer (nick-sawyer@hotmail.co.uk) or 07767 403624 if you (or a club group) are attending. (We expect this to be a busy night and need to prepare Sound and seating etc.) | ||

'Turbo' event |
|
| Looking for a way of working off some of those mince pies? Hoping to get some racing practice before the start of the next series?
Next weekend's 'Turbo' event might just be the ticket! Fast and furious, the idea is to have as many 10 minute races as we can fit into a two and a half hour session as we can. Each race will consist of a three minute starting sequence followed by two laps of a windward-leeward course. I will be on board the rescue boat with my video camera to film each start and your mark roundings so that you can see how you did in the bar at the end of the session.
For the Laser 2000, Stratos, Vago, RS200 and Vareos the time difference from fastest to slowest in a 10 minute race is less than 30 seconds, which should make for close racing, and for the purposes of the results you will be sailing off the same handicap. If there are only one or two Laser 4000s, I will multiply your times by 1.2 to get a result.
We will aim to start on the water at 10.30, Andrew and I will be at the club from 09.30 to help and advise. During the racing, if you want to sit out a race, or come alongside for some top tips that will be fine. If you can't make a 10.30 start, come along anyway and join in the next start as soon as you get on the water.
Please let me know if you intend coming along.
Regards
Helen it is open to CBYC and CYC members with an Asymmetric Dinghy with a PY in the range 900 to 1100 |

New RYA course for Fishermen and Power boaters |
|
| The Royal Yachting Association have brought out a new shorebased course written specially for fishermen, power boaters, and divers, as well as for sailors, and CBYC will be running this course for the first time this spring. The course covers navigation, both paper and electronic, tides, buoyage and colregs (the Marine Highway code), together with weather forecast basics and safety. It is not an academic course – it’s a practical classroom course run in a way that makes it interesting. All you need is simple school arithmetic skills and access to a PC running Windows. There is no exam at the end of the course! Tuition totals 16 hours which we can do either as one evening a week for 8 successive weeks, starting in March 2008, or as two full days in one or two weekends again in March 2008. If you are interested, come along to the enrolment evening to hear more and we will sort out dates and decide whether to run a 2 day course or an 8 week course (or both) at the time. Enrolment: CBYC Clubhouse – Quay Lounge (Downstairs Bar) Tuesday 5th February 20:00 hours If you can’t make enrolment but are still interested in learning about the course, then phone the tutor, Howard Easton on tel: 01291 671118 or email: howard_easton@hotmail.com | ||

The People’s £50 Million - Sustrans' Connect2 bid |
|
| Sustrans' Connect2 bid is competing on ITV against 3 other projects in the Big Lottery Fund’s: The People’s £50 Million contest Who wins the £50 million will be decided by a public vote. Sustrans' Connect2 is an ambitious UK-wide project that will make it possible for millions of people to make everyday journeys in a way that is good for health and the 0environment. Connect2 will transform local travel in 79 cities, towns and villages across the UK by creating new walking and cycling routes for the journeys we all make every day. New bridges and crossings will be created over busy roads, railway lines and rivers that currently stop people getting around by foot or bike. Each crossing will link to a network of walking and cycling routes, making it possible to get directly and safely to the shops, school, work, the park and to the countryside. Connect2 will put you back in touch with your local area, your family and friends. For example the Pont y Werin foot and cycle bridge crossing the River Ely to link Cardiff and Penarth is one of 79 projects across the UK. If Connect2 wins, Sustrans will allocate £1.15 million of the £50 million towards Pont y Werin being built. The 140 metre bridge would enable pedestrians and cyclists to cross between Penarth at Cogan and the International Sports Village at Cardiff Bay. It would also open to allow the passage of river traffic. For more details on this, and the other 78 Sustrans projects across the UK see http://www.sustransconnect2.org.uk/schemes Everyone can vote for Connect2 to win. Click here to see how to vote |

The Welsh Optimist Championships |
|
| As the President of Cardiff Bay Yacht Club I would like to extend my sincere and heartfelt thanks for the immense effort put in to the organisation both on and off the water of this highly successful Welsh National Optimist meeting. Well over seventy dinghies on the water from all over the United Kingdom and Ireland - three days of superb racing with CBYC young members showing their skills in triumphant fashion. I am sure I speak for all the officers of the Club and all members of the Council of Management when I say that the Club should be extremely proud of the meticulous arrangements that had been put in place - the "village" of camper vans - the very sensible huge temporary parking arrangements - on the water the O.O.D's, mark layers and safety boats worked without an apparent hitch! We have been congratulated from all quarters on the way we did it - it makes me feel very proud to be President of a Club that can hold and organise such an enormous meeting - well done everyone concerned! John Mead. President. | ||
