7th April 2008

The fleet for the Spring Series has been decided with a Sportsboat fleet, an IRC fleet and a PY fleet. The series got underway yesterday with a pleasant low water race in a 15kt breeze with the wind going from NW to SE by the end of the race. Musketeer had a relatively straightforward win in the Sportsboat fleet with Zulu retiring after a few minutes. In the IRC fleet John Mead's Spirit of Tilman had an excellent start at out at Mid Cardiff and came in only about 11 minutes after Sleeper to win the race by the same margin. The PY fleet decided to spend the day in bed - was it something I said?

There was some discussion last weekend about the exact location of the 'Diffuser' buoy. Well, I went out for a sail myself last week and there it was. 51° 27.50' N 3° 04.50' W ish just as I thought.

Next Sunday it is an 11o'clock start from PYC and will see a welcome return for Syd Thomas will be in charge, so get yourselves down the start line on time.

2nd April 2008

The Spring Series race programme is announced. It all kicks off with a Low water Race at 1200 this coming Sunday. See the full programme here. Fleet allocation will be decided before the first race. If there are enough sportsboats to make a viable fleet, then they will have there own fleet. If not and there are a large number of IRC boats entered then a sports/classic split will be considered. Otherwise there may be a single IRC fleet. There will be a PY fleet. Click here to enter.

1st April 2008

The Spring Starter Regatta provided two days of very mixed racing. On the Saturday a breezy Round the Cans was followed by a couple of short and sharp races in the Bay in quite blustery conditions. Sunday turned out to be a very pleasant sailing day with another Round the Cans in the morning and a Bay race in the afternoon.

The Spring Series starts next Sunday. A full race program will be published here in the next couple of days. This may vary from previously published information so check here later.

25th March 2008

Well, thats the Early Bird Series done. Congratulations to the winners and all competitors. Who would have thought Tail Patch was such a difficult place to get to!

Some IRC competitors will have noticed that they seem to have been disqualified from their races in the Early Bird. This is because they either havent copied me their IRC certificate or they havent paid or in one case both.

On a brighter note, next weekend we have the Spring Starter Regatta. We will have three fleets - Sportsboats, IRC and PY. The Sportsboat fleet will be racing with CBYC Sportsboat Handicaps and so there is no need for anyone to get a Sportsboat Certificate. Its only £10 to enter if you pay before the start otherwise its £20. It would be appreciated if competitors would enter online this week.

20th March 2008

Last race of the series this Sunday. Its a low water race starting a couple of hours before low water, so I'd be expecting a race of about 3 hours.

The presentation of prizes for this series will take place as soon as possible after racing in the Clubhouse.

10th March 2008

Well, thats the last Bay race of the series, and just two more races in the series to go. Both start at 1200 from PYC - next week a normal RTC race and a low water race the week after. Thanks to Chris Pope for laying and picking up the course and to Starship for not running down the committee boat.

Dont forget to enter the Spring Starter Regatta if you havent already. Click here to enter. We are expecting some large fleets for this event that will, hopefully, include a couple of boats from Swansea.

4th March 2008

A bit of a disappointing course on Sunday as the wind went SW instead of the NW as I was expecting. I suppose thats RTC racing for you. A Bay race next week at 1400 - marvellous. I'll pump up my armbands now.

If you were wondering what happens on Chill Out, then you need to look no further than here. I'm sure Mike would welcome suggestions on how he could improve his cinamatography.

The Spring Starter Regatta will be on us soon. Its the weekend of 29th & 30th March - thats the weekend after Easter. See the race programme here. Free refreshments will be provided on the Saturday after racing, but as its the Club annual dinner that night there may be some disruption to the usual Club facilities. Please note that fleets will be decided on entries recieved by the Thursday evening and at present there are only a possible 3 sportsboats entered which is not enough for a fleet. There will definately be a PY fleet.

25th February 2008

Yesterdays race over Low Water seemed to work out well for the majority of the fleet. A special thanks to 'Gatsby' for highlighting the shallow patch between the pier and Outer Wrach. Their afternoons activities attracted an impressive three 999 calls to the coastguard!

Those of you who have seen the racing calendar either on the website or in the Cruiser Racing Handbook will have spotted that the Spring Series was missing a Race 9. This has been remedied by adding a race on 22nd June to make it up to 12 races. The weekend of 19th/20th April was shown as being on the Friday and Saturday with Race 3 of the Spring Series being held on the Saturday. This has now been changed so that the race is on the Sunday.

The presentation of prizes for this Series will be held in the Clubhouse as soon as possible after the last race. Further details will be published as they become available..

18th February 2008

Well, the fleet is growing! 23 boats out on Sunday as a number of boats join in the IRC fleet. Welcome to a new J80 to the fleet 'Chilli Jam'.

The astute racer will have spotted that next Sundays race is to be held approximately 1 hour before low water. They will make sure that they lock out while there is a sufficient depth of water in the locks, harbour and approach channel. The use of a properly adjusted echo sounder might be prudent during the course of the race.

Fleet allocation, Payment and IRC certificates

What a good start to the new season. 20 boats have competed in the two fleets so far with at least two more poised to join later. Yesterdays low water race seemed to be a welcome alternative to thrashing up and down the Bay for an hour. It was good to see all the boats returned safely, especially our new 'King of the Castle'.

With regard to fleet allocation I shall in future be basing it on the number of boats which are entered into the series before the start. For the current series only 5 non-PY boats were entered before the start of Race 1 (and one of those in the Car Park an hour before!) and so there will be a single IRC fleet for the series. Boats can enter online and pay at the office and should do both. The Office accept cheques, cash or cards in person, by post or on the phone, although having said that they dont take cash over the phone.

The fees for the 2008 programme were published in the latest Bear Essentials, but for those who missed it here it is again.
"The racing fee structure is very similar to last year with the basic prices unchanged although there are a few small changes to encourage the early entry of boats into each series and so that all competitors contribute to support the racing programme. The fees are as follows;

Earlybird Series £20
Spring Starter Regatta £10
Spring Series £25
Tuesday Evening Spring Series £15
Tuesday Evening Summer Series £15
Frostbite Series £20

So, to enter all the series the cost is £105, but if you pay before 3rd February the cost is a mere £90. If you want to enter a series after it has started then the cost increases by £10. Boats may enter individual races at £5 a go by prior arrangement with the Race Officer. If a boat appears to start three or more races in a series, but does not pay an entry fee, then the fee for that series plus the £10 penalty will be required before they can pay for a subsequent series. Pay by cheque, payable to ‘Cardiff Bay Yacht Club’, Credit Card or Cash direct to the Club Office"

My record keeping can be pretty shoddy at times so you can now check to see if I think you have paid. Click here to see a copy of my spreadsheet of whose paid what for 2008. If you have paid and you are not on the list then you need to do something - and fast. The club office will update me each week on payments they have recieved. You have a rather generous two weeks after your first race pay before you start being disqualified.

I have seen very few IRC certificates so far this year. Please get me a copy of yours. You can email it, leave a copy behind the bar or in the office. Only boats with IRC current certificates will be included in the final results. Click hereto see if I have a copy of your certificate. If your handicap is in red then I havent got a copy.

Christmas Party and Frostbite Presentation evening

The Christmas Party and Frostbite Presentation evening will be held on Saturday 15th December. It will include a hot buffet and appropriate entertainment. Tickets are available at £8 each to Boat Owners from the Club office during normal working hours in person or by phone from now. They will be available to all Club Members and their guests from 1st December, so get yours now.

2008 Race Programme

There will be a meeting in the Clubhouse as soon as possible after racing on November 25th. This is to discuss the format of the 2008 racing programme. All owners/helms are invited to attend

Frostbite Series Update

Further to the note below, the results of Race 1 have been recalculated to use the 2 lap times of the those boats that completed two laps and an average time for two laps for those boats which completed one lap.

Frostbite Series

Insufficient boats are entered into the 'IRC Classic' fleet to make a viable class. The boats that are entered will join the boats in the 'IRC Sports' fleet to form a single IRC fleet. The results from Race 1 have been changed to use the times of boats completing the first lap.

Dale Weekend

A number of boats are going off to Dale Weekend at the end of August. See all about it here. James Dwyer is interested in hearing from anybody who is going, email him here

The Westawaysails Tuesday Evening Summer Series

The Tuesday Evening Spring Series and the Spring Series ended last week with the presentation of prizes on Saturday after racing. There is now no more weekend racing until the Shanghai and Nimrod Cup events in September. Details of these will be posted here when they are available.

We are delighted to say that the next Tuesday evening Series will be sponsored by Westawaysails. The Series will be known as the Westawaysails Tuesday Evening Summer Series. The series starts on July 3rd and ends on 21st August. All starts will be at 1900 and there will be classes for Sportsboats, IRC and PY yachts.

End of Series Presentation Party

The Presentation of Prizes for the Spring Series and the Tuesday Evening Summer Series will be after racing on Saturday 30th June. Please let me know what kind of party you would enjoy the most by emailing me here. (Do you want a disco, band or neither - sit down meal or buffet etc.)

Tuesday Evening Racing

The Tuesday evening racing starts on the 8th May at 1900. As last year there will be two series giving a total of sixteen races. £15 for each series with a £5 late payment surcharge. (The late payment surcharge is made to encourage competitors to enter early and ease the administrative burden of the events)

As in previous years there will be three fleets - IRC, PY and Sportsboats.

Spring Series

The 2007 Spring Series starts this weekend. The entry fee is £25 before the 15th April and £30 afterwards. Dont forget the Sailing Instructions state 'Failure to pay the Race Fee within two weeks of a yacht’s first start shall result in previous races being discounted.' This will be applied at the Race Committees discretion.

Early Bird Series

Dont forget that British Summer Time starts this weekend. The clocks go on an hour - so if you forget you will be an hour late!

Early Bird Series

The presentation of prizes for the Early Bird Series will be held after racing in the Clubhouse next Sunday.

Cruiser Racing Handbook

I have produced a number of 'Cruiser Racing Handbooks' for 2007.

They contain the whole years racing calendar and the Sailing Instructions as well as notes on PY Handicapping and IRC Fleet allocation.

They also contain a Course List. These courses may be used when appropriate and may be refered to by course number only. It is therefore vital that all owners/helmsmen have this information.

All the information is copied
here or a copy of the handbook is available from me.

Early Bird 2007

Please note that the first Race in the Series will now start at 1200

Portsmouth Yardstick

Following a meeting of competitors the allocation of handicaps, their progression and material changes are described here. They will be in operation from the start of the 2006 Frostbite series.

Frostbite Series

Another change to the racing programme. The race on the 5th of November will now start at 1530. This is to accomodate the youth training event planned for that weekend.

Frostbite Series

The racing program has been changed. The plan is now to race until December 10th leaving out the race on the 17th. The Christmas Party/presentation night will be held on FRIDAY 15th December. This event will be open to all Club members so if you want to go make sure you get your tickets early.

Cruiser Racing Newsletter September 2006

Were does the time go, we have reached the end of our Spring and Summer racing season already !!!!! By the time you read this edition of “Bear Essentials”, I hope all you keen sailors will have made your entries for the “ Bay Pointe” sponsored “Shanghai” and “Nimrod Cup’s”.

Our “Tuesday Evening Summer Series” came to an end on the 29th of August and what an excellent series it has been with 24 boats competing in three classes. Once again P.Y. was the largest class and there was still everything to play for up until the last race, with at least four or five boats in contention for 2nd and 3rd place which went to “Bugweed” and “Birthday Girl”. Congratulations to “Pindari” who had a run away victory with eight firsts out of nine races. I understand she is a Robber quarter ton class yacht, which are enjoying something of a revival on the South Coast at the moment. Nationally small yacht and sports boat racing seems to be on the up.

Unfortunately IRC class could only field four boats for this series, but it is understandable as this event is all bay racing and quite a lot of the larger boats go off to other events or on summer cruises at this time of the year, which is why we have not attempted to run a weekend series during July and August. Anyway well done to those who made the effort to enter with the eventual winner being “Papillon”, “Zulu” 2nd and “In The Doghouse” 3rd.

In sports boat class ( 9 entries ) “Musketeer” a Cork 1720 was the boat to beat being nine points clear of the next boat by the end of the series. There was a lot of friendly rivalry amongst the J80 fleet with “Purple Haze” 2nd piping “Junior High” 3rd, by just one point. Welcome and well done to newcomers “Merlin” 1720 and “Just in Time” J80, who were certainly getting on the pace by the end of the series. Thank you to all the skippers who took our young sailors and visitors aboard during the summer. We are very fortunate in having some very talented junior and youth sailors in our club now, so if you are short of crew and see them around looking for a sail please give them a chance and do not be surprised or embarrassed if you find some of them a lot better than us !!!!!!!!!

The weekend and Tuesday night “Spring Series” racing was well supported with around 20 boats in each event. We were hoping to publish all the summer seasons results in B.E. this month but I have been warned by the editor that space is at premium for this issue and not to ramble on for to long, so please check on the club web site for all the up to date racing information. One thing that has become apparent from talking to many of you this season is that format of racing Saturday and Sunday every other weekend is not popular. This was quite a common practice in Cardiff before the barrage was constructed and we had little choice this year because of the tides. However I am please to advise you that the “Frost Bite Series” which starts on the 15th of October will return to racing every Sunday with the last race on 10th of December which will enable us to hold a prize giving and “ Christmas Party” on Saturday the 16th of December, so please put the date in your diary.

Finally thank you to our race officer team Dave Cairncross, Syd Thomas and Colin Farr and to Colin Lyons for his help on the social scene. We now have all of the Autumn racing events to come and I look forward to seeing on the water.

C.B.Y.C. CRUISER RACING NEWS LETTER 21st JUNE

Well done everyone another good turnout for the Tuesday Night Spring Series, with some close racing in blustery conditions.

It still looks very close at the top, particularly in P.Y. with a lot depending on the last race next week.

The last race of the Weekend Spring Series will be on Saturday the 1st of July and there is still everything to play for looking at some of the results. I know its an early start but try and make the effort to get out as it would be really nice to have a large turn out for the last race.

On Saturday evening we have the end of series presentations for both the "Weekend and Tuesday Night Spring Series".

We have some excellent food and music arranged and tickets are now available for behind the bar at £10 each, so please make an effort to come along as we would like to have a chat with everyone about forthcoming events particularly those that we are combing with the dinghy section.

On the 29th July at 1400 there will be the Two Islands Race. This is a race around Flatholm and Steepholm and is held in conjunction with the Dinghy Section. See the homepage or the Dinghy page for more details.

Congratulations to Forebitters (1st PY), Ishkoodah (2nd PY) and Courtier (3rd PY), and Junior High (1st IRC), Papillon (2nd IRC) and Jackhammer (3rd IRC) for their success in the Regatta last weekend.

23 April 2006
An interesting weekend sailing dominated by light winds. On Saturday the IRc and Sportsboat fleet were unable to complete the shortened course as the early ebb swept the fleet offshore. The Py fleet fared less well with only one boat passing the first mark. Naddura went on to complete 95% of the shortened course but couldn't manage the last couple of hundred yards to the line. On Sunday the light and variable winds turned into a pleasant Northerly just as the course was shortened. All the boats managed a finish. 9 April 2006
The 2006 Spring Series got underway with boats competing in all three classes. The PY fleet was joined by Mike Clarke's Syllabub and John Griffith's Pindari. The IRC Fleet was made up of the stalwarts from the Eary Bird series. Three J80s made up the Sportsboat fleet.

The final Race of the Early Bird series saw seven boats on the start line. In the IRC class Zulu needed to finish two boats ahead of Jackhammer to secure the series, but with only these two from the fleet racing it looked good for Jackhammer from the start. Zulu's prerace meeting didn't seem to pay off as they gave the fleet a good 30 second start. The PY fleet had a suprisingly close race with the first boats finishing within 6 seconds on corrected time.

Race 7 saw an interesting short low water race. Poor race management ensured that there was insufficient water for the lead IRC boats to round the last mark and so redress was given to that fleet. The PY boats fared slightly better with a shortened course. Interestingly the only two boats to run aground were the class winners - so a lesson to be learned there.
This was the first time for quite some while that a short low water race has been held and it seemed to be generally enjoyed by the fleet and makes for a viable alternative to racing around the Bay. Hopefully they will be more successful in the future.

The blustery and biting cold didn't put off the cruiser fleet again this week. In the IRC Class Zulu snatched a victory from Jackhammer by 18 seconds, narrowing John's lead in the series to 1 point. In PY a victory for Aliseo puts them on equal points to Ishkoodah. Xanadu is only 4 points behind with 12 points and 2 races to go.

Thanks to Colin Lyons for laying the course and to Jon Crofts Davies for supplying the anchor to the committee boat.

Don't forget the Spring Starter regatta on the 1st and 2nd April. The prizes for the Early Bird series will be presented at the party on the Saturday night. Tickets available from the bar or office soon.

Your committee has now finalised all the racing for 2006 and to support this I'm keen to build up a team of competant Race Officers. Its not difficult and just requires some commitment. If you would like to join this team please get in touch with me.

Read Steve Cooper's February Newsletter here and the racing events list here

Almost fourteen years ago Cardiff Bay Channel Fleets was formed as a tripartite body to organise sailing cruiser racing for members of the three yacht clubs in the area and we owe a debt of gratitude to those who had the foresight to start such a venture and our particular thanks must go to Syd Thomas who has given so much of his time for our pleasure over the years.

Regrettably the 2005 "Frost Bite" series will be the last event to be run under the auspices of C.B.C.F., a decision not taken lightly by those concerned. However the fortunes and trends of our sport are ever changing and it now falls upon Cardiff Bay Yacht Club to organize the cruiser racing for all concerned. This decision also has the full support of our good neighbours Penarth Yacht Club.

A working committee is to be set up within C.B.Y.C. to organise all our future cruiser racing events for next season and the foreseeable future. One of the most important objectives of the new committee will be to make our cruiser racing more appealing to a wider range of sailors than perhaps it has in recent years, particularly those with cruising boats and not just "racer cruisers", to coin an industry phrase. Racing does not have to be expensive and can be very good fun for the whole of the family in the cruiser class. It is currently very encouraging to see so many boats taking part in the PY class of the "Frost Bite" and this is something we will want to build on.

Our sports boat fleet is currently very healthy but the low numbers in the IRC class is more than a little concerning. Offshore racing events have also dwindled in the last few seasons as well and we are keen to address these areas.

It is our intention to put a working committee together, certainly no later than Christmas and we need your help !!!!!!!! The writer is acting temporary chairman and our sailing secretary Paul Simes has overall responsibility for the group and all club sailing events. We are fortunate in having David Cairncross on board as principle race officer and he is also responsible for the club website where much of our racing information will be available in the future.

Further good news is that Syd Thomas has been persuaded by extremely persuasive parties not to retire completely and will be part of the new race officer team.

Tony Davies our communications officer has agreed to look after these matters and represent the cruising member’s interests, with view to developing "P.Y.Cruiser Passage Racing" in the future.

Therefore we are looking for some enthusiastic volunteers to serve in the following roles.

We also anticipate that someone from Penarth Yacht Club will be getting involved in any meetings concerning event planning and we would hope that sometime in the future Cardiff Yacht Club would also participate.

If you are interested and want to help, please get in contact with Paul Simes. Your comments and advice on how you would like to see our racing develop in the future would be gratefully received. A forum will be available on the club website for this purpose in the near future.

We are looking for fresh ideas and a new approach so please come forward and get involved.

Finally an "End of Season" and "Frost Bite Series" presentation evening is being held at the club on the 17th of December after racing. Tickets are available from Nick Sawyer. Please make an effort to come along even if you have not been racing recently as it will be a good opportunity to have a few drinks with old friends before Christmas and discuss our future plans.

Finally please keep a close eye on the club website and "Bear Essentials" for all the latest cruiser racing news.
