Welcome to the Angling Section

The CBYC Angling Section is a well-supported and very active Section of the Club.

Last season the Section had just 54 Members, and up to date, [02.08.2007], many have re-joined for the current season, which commenced on March 31st. Naturally, we are more than pleased to announce that membership has now reached over one hundred, thanks to Syd Hearne’s tireless efforts in recruiting new members since he became Membership Secretary after the last AGM.

The Section organises many Competitions during the period 1st May – 28th February and a list of these is posted on the Section Notice Board. The prizes for these Competitions can be Tackle Vouchers, (£50 & £30), and alternates between Tackle Vouchers and Cash. In either case; the next five receive vouchers for Two Pints over the bar.

Unlike previous seasons, when ‘Heaviest Fish’ decided the winners, the new system is now being used which is based on a percentage basis, using the Welsh Federation of Sea Anglers’ Records listings as benchmarks. A ‘Sample Weigh-in’ using the new method can be seen on the Notice Board. This will be the third season that we’ve used this system and it appears to be operating successfully.

A One Day Open Cod Competition is usually arranged and this year’s will take place on the 18th November. This Competition is always well supported; e.g. 110 Boats with 426 Anglers registered to enter this Competition November 2004. Last year there were £3,000 worth of prizes, £1,100 in cash, [£600, 1st, £300, 2nd and £200 3rd], the remainder being rods, reels etc. making 33 prizes in all.

As in previous years, the Section will be making a sizeable donation to a carefully chosen charity. This year’s charity has yet to be decided upon and we’d welcome suggestions from members. The general opinion is, that this year we’ll look for a small reasonably well known children’s charity

At Christmas time we organise a Christmas Competition with Three Turkey Prizes and Seven Monster Chicken Prizes for the first ten prize-winners. Also, each Section Member entering the Competition receives a Christmas Chicken. We also arrange Inter-Club competitions with Cardiff Yacht Club and these are usually well supported.

A Fishermen’s Presentation Night for Members and their partners, with a buffet is always a successful means of “getting together”. And this year it was held on Saturday 21st April and went very well indeed.

Traditionally, Wednesday evenings have been Fishermen’s Night in the Club, when Members meet for a pint or two and a “chinwag”.

Even if you think you’re not very interested in fishing, you are more than welcome to join in on a Wednesday evening, so, why not come down and sample the camaraderie that exists within the Section. You never know, you may become “Hooked”! A full year’s membership of the Section only costs £10.00, (£1.00 for family juniors under 18yrs), and is well worth it. Membership application forms are available from the Section Notice Board or, from over the Bar. [The Membership Secretary is: Syd Hearne. 01446 740 697 ]

Please don’t forget—The Committee is always wanting to hear from members, so, if you’ve got anything to say or have any ideas or suggestions –Do please get in touch.
